The exact cause of TMD is often unknown, but it is believed that factors such as stress, teeth grinding and misalignment of the teeth can contribute to this condition. The only way to determine if you have this condition is to consult a specialist who can diagnose and provide appropriate treatment.

Blossom Dental Excellence proudly offers TMD therapy in San Jose, CA. Our dentist has extensive experience in treating TMD and helping patients find relief from their symptoms.

What Is TMD?

TMD, or Temporomandibular Disorders, refers to a group of conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the muscles that control jaw movement. This joint connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull, which are in front of each ear. It allows you to move your jaw up and down and side to side so you can talk, chew and yawn. Symptoms of TMD can include:
  • Pain or tenderness in the face, jaw joint area, neck and shoulders and in or around the ear when you chew, speak or open your mouth wide
  • Limited ability to open the mouth very wide Jaws that get “stuck” or “locked” in the open- or closed-mouth position
  • Clicking, popping or grating sounds in the jaw joint when opening or closing the mouth (which may or may not be accompanied by pain)
  • A tired feeling in the face
  • Difficulty chewing or a sudden uncomfortable bite – as if the upper and lower teeth are not fitting together properly
As mentioned, the exact cause of a person’s TMD is often difficult to determine. Your pain may be due to a combination of factors, such as genetics, arthritis or jaw injury. Some people with jaw pain also tend to clench or grind their teeth, although many habitually clench or grind their teeth and never develop TMD.

It’s important to note that while discomfort from TMD can be severe, it’s often temporary and can be relieved with self-care practices like eating soft foods, applying ice or moist heat, avoiding extreme jaw movements and managing stress. More comprehensive treatment options are available if these approaches don’t provide relief.

Diagnosing TMD

To accurately diagnose TMD, we will perform a comprehensive evaluation of your symptoms, examine your jaw and bite and may take X-rays to rule out other potential causes for your pain. We will also review your medical history and discuss any recent injuries or incidents that may have contributed to your symptoms.

If we determine that you are suffering from TMD, we will develop a personalized treatment plan for you.

What Are the TMD Therapy Options Available?

Occlusal Splints or Nightguards

These custom-made plastic mouthpieces fit over your upper and lower teeth, intended to reduce clenching or grinding, minimize muscle tension and protect the teeth. Nightguards may also be helpful for people who clench their jaws while sleeping.

Physical Therapy

This type of therapy is used to stretch and strengthen the muscles involved in jaw movement. It can include exercises, massage and ultrasound treatment.

Medications

In some cases, over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or naproxen sodium may help relieve pain. Muscle relaxants or other prescription medications may be recommended for more severe cases.

Injections

In rare instances, corticosteroid injections into the jaw joint can help relieve pain and inflammation.

Surgery

If all other treatment options have been exhausted, oral surgery may be an option for those with severe TMD. This may involve repairing or replacing the joint, adjusting the bite, or removing scar tissue.
